In English, mostly — that is what you are here to practise. What Chinese buys you is the ten seconds where a word will not come or a rule makes no sense: the tutor explains it in your own language and the lesson carries on instead of stalling.

Below about B1 it usually is, because the alternative is guessing. Once you can follow an explanation in English it matters much less, and you should pick on teaching rather than on the shared language.
