How long does it take to improve your English?

Timelines · 2 min read · updated 2026-08-22

Language schools quote hours; apps quote streaks. Neither answers the question people actually ask, which is "how long until I can do the thing I need to do?" Here are honest numbers.

The hours behind each level

The widely used estimates for moving up one CEFR level with study and practice:

Those are total learning hours, not lesson hours. A lesson is the part that fixes what you cannot fix alone; the rest is exposure — reading, listening, using the language.

What that means in weeks

Two 50-minute lessons a week is about 85 lesson hours a year. Add three hours a week of your own reading and listening and you are at roughly 240 hours a year, which is about one CEFR level for most adults at B1 and above. Faster is possible, and it comes almost entirely from doing more outside the lessons.

The timelines people really want

The three things that change the timeline most

1. Frequency beats duration. Two 50-minute lessons a week beat one 100-minute lesson, every time. Less warm-up, more retrieval, more chances to notice a mistake between lessons. 2. Speaking time in the lesson. If the teacher talks for 70% of the hour, you are buying listening practice at a speaking price. 3. What happens between lessons. Twenty minutes a day of something you would do anyway in your own language — news, a podcast, a show without subtitles — roughly doubles the effect of the lessons.

The single most common reason people plateau is not talent or age. It is that they take the same comfortable lesson every week and never do anything difficult in it.

How to tell it is working before the level changes

Levels move slowly; symptoms move fast. Within a month you should notice:

If none of that is happening after six weeks, change something: the frequency, the teacher, or what you do between lessons. Tutors here charge from $5 to $26 an hour, so changing is cheap; not changing is what costs.

Try it with one tutor first

The $5 Trial Pass buys 25-minute trials with up to four tutors, so you can meet several before you commit to a course of lessons.

Questions people ask

How many lessons do I need to speak fluently?

Fluency is not one milestone. For comfortable everyday conversation from a solid intermediate level, expect two lessons a week for three to six months plus daily listening. For a specific task — an interview, a presentation — three to five focused lessons often do it.

Can I improve my English in one month?

You can measurably improve one skill in one month — speaking confidence, exam technique, the vocabulary of your own job. You cannot move a full CEFR level in a month; that takes a few hundred hours.

Is one lesson a week enough?

It is enough to keep improving slowly if you read and listen on your own in between. If lessons are your only contact with the language, twice a week is the point where most people start to feel it.
